MMDC HISTORY

While the Memphis Medical District (the “District”) had long been an economic driver for Memphis – both as a major employer and scientific innovator – it was merely a home to major healthcare and educational institutions. Despite their prominent presence, the surrounding neighborhoods had suffered from years of disinvestment and depopulation. Realizing the economic and cultural potential of this underserved District and leveraging the collective economic power of its major institutions, the Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC), a nonprofit community development organization, was established in 2016 to work with these institutions to strengthen and develop a more vibrant, prosperous, and equitable District.

After nearly 10 successful years as an organization and more than $18 million in direct investments, the Medical District is a better place to live, work, learn and play

These investments have had a direct impact by driving investment into public spaces, cleaner and safer streets, community and economic development initiatives, transportation and mobility, real estate development, and event programming.

With an ambitious agenda to support the Medical District’s growth and transformation into a desired destination for employees, students, residents and visitors, MMDC’s work is just getting started.
