The Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC) recently hosted Strangewaze, a high-energy community celebration that transformed the District into a hub of music, local commerce, and neighborhood pride. Despite a looming rain forecast, the event proceeded under clear skies, drawing a diverse crowd of residents, students, and professionals.
Strangewaze serves as a prime example of strategic community engagement, blending meticulous event planning with a deep commitment to showcasing local talent and small businesses.
Executing an event of this scale requires a dedicated village. The success of Strangewaze 2026 was made possible by the seamless teamwork of the MMDC staff, the foundational vision of concept creator Emily Todd, and masterful support in coordination by Kenitra Wright ("The Wright Event Planner"). From the "double-duty" volunteer warriors managing logistics to the neighborhood tours that showcased our growth, every detail was fueled by a shared commitment to the District.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the powerhouse organizations and partners who invested in this vision of community vitality:
The heartbeat of the event was our vendor row, featuring:
Shangri-La Records, Silk N Honey Permanent Jewelry, Axe N Chill, Kooler Gurlz, Playa Bowls, Chai’s Halal Bowls and Tacos, Amurica Photo Booth, Sabor Caribe, Good Groceries Mobile Diner, and Slowdown Dry Goods.
For MMDC, Strangewaze is more than just a party; it is the manifestation of strategic community building. It represents the delicate balance of learning from the neighborhood’s needs and taking swift action to create spaces where everyone feels welcome. Seeing the community come together reminds us why the work of urban revitalization and engagement is so vital.
Thank you to everyone who showed out, supported local, and made Strangewaze 2026 an unforgettable success.
