Celebrate National Black Business Month in the Medical District!
August 14, 2025

This National Black Business Month, we're spotlighting some of the incredible Black-owned businesses that give our Medical District neighborhoods their heart and soul. These aren't just businesses; they're Memphis legends!

Legacy

Cozy Corner, one of Memphis’s most well-known BBQ spots, has been serving up comfort and classics since 1977. Arnold's BBQ & Grill, a family-owned and operated eatery owned by Mike Arnold, has been a local favorite since it opened its doors on Madison. Ritzee Florist, owned and operated by Sharon Coleman, has been bringing beauty to Memphis with elegant floral designs since 1988, while the iconic Alcenia's, owned by B.J. Chester-Tamayo, has been dishing out famous hugs and soul food since 1997. Alcenia’s is named for Chester-Tamayo’s daughter, who is now old enough to work in the famed restaurant.

Historical havens like Slave Haven in Uptown and House of Mtenzi, situated just steps from the Southern College of Optometry and is one of the oldest existing black businesses in Midtown, along with community minded businesses like Mitchell Consulting are dedicated to preserving history and building a stronger community.

The history of these vital staples makes them a vital part of the area's cultural and commercial heritage, preserving the legacy of black entrepreneurship and community resilience in Memphis.

But the legacy continues! Newcomers like Slim & Husky's, with their delicious artisan pizzas, and Wonky's Not So Famous Treats, with their sweet creations, are adding a fresh buzz to the area. Lavish A Luxe Boutique (Lavish Too) makes sure customers look awesome while enjoying it all.
